The Baby Bag

When one of my closest friends announced she was pregnant, I immediately started planning birth announcements and baby showers in my head. Since that was a long way off, I decided to make her a little care package for the time being.

Putting together little gifts was simple- her favourite chocolate, happy books to read, relaxing bath salts etc. Where I really had fun, was with the design- It's always fun designing for someone who you know will appreciate your effort more than anyone else will, so I put my heart into this and wound up having the best time.

I knew I wanted to work with animals, but since my animal-drawing skills are entirely hopeless, I had to find another way around this. After toying with building block illustration ideas (see what I did there) origami animal ideas and a whole lot more, I decided to work with knitting patterns. Pixellating anything is fun, but this gave it all such a cozy, fuzzy feel.

I started off with a few lines of text for each present, working off all our phone conversations in the past few weeks (her saying she felt like a whale, for instance) and added in an animal for each. I designed box templates to fit each present, and then filled in patterns on the top, animals on the spine and silly surprises on the back.
