Overview
A new product offering from Raymond Made to Measure, Barbados is a premium fabric made from one of the most ancient and precious cotton types in the world - rare, strong, exceptionally fine and grown exclusively in the island of Barbados. I was approached by the team at Raymond to design an identity for Barbados that they could use both in-store and on communication to promote their new product.
The Identity
The identity needed to introduce Barbados as a premium offering and to tell the story of the fabric- a story of luxury, of ancient tradition, and unparalleled quality. Inspired by 18th Century cartography (which is also when Barbados cotton was first discovered) and the place of origin of Sea Island Cotton, I designed an identity with a cotton bud in the centre and forms inspired by waves all around. With typography inspired by maps and old-style lettering, the identity told a story of luxury and of heritage.
The Visual Style
With a soothing colour palette of turquoise and blue (to represent the sea) and yellow and beige, (to represent the sun and sand) the primary colours I used drew inspiration from the islands we were paying homage to. The secondary colour palette with muted shades of green, rust and charcoal, together with old-style serif typography helped tell the story of this premium offering.
From product labels, swing tags, shirt boxes and tissue wrapping to brochures and communication, each brand touch-point was designed in keeping with a strong, consistent visual style.
